Sep 16, 2015 — Well, it’s that time of year again when the children are all back in school, the temperatures are slowly headed on a downward spiral, and thoughts of pumpkins and Halloween are right around the corner. However, these are not the only things that are going on at this time of the year. There is another very important event that is about to take place this coming weekend.
What event is coming up this weekend? I am so glad that you asked. The event that is taking place this coming Saturday, September 19th, 2015 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. is the Community Spelling Bee for Books of the Imagination Library of Daviess County at the Blessed Mother Catholic Church Parrish Hall. Yes, you heard me right, a spelling bee.
The Imagination Library was founded by Dolly Parton in her Tennessee hometown in 1996. Basically, since the fall of 2007 our county has become an affiliate and works very hard to partner with other organizations to make sure that the children in this community can have the opportunity to read. The primary goal of the program is to make sure any registered child from birth to the age of 5 receives a book in the mail each month without charge. The local Daviess County chapter relies heavily on donations from others in order to be able to fund such an inspiring program.
The Daviess County Public Library’s Friends of the Library has assisted in partnering with and sponsoring the Imagination Library Daviess County chapter for several years now in helping to promote this program and provide additional avenues for literacy for school-age children. One of the ways that the library assists in promoting this program is through providing a team of library staffers to attend the Spelling Bee and do the best we can to spell our way to success.
Our team for this year is ready to go and our theme will be Pirates of the Librarrrrry: The Curse of the Blackened Book. So, get ready ye library landlubbers to set your sights on the strange and wonderful as we embark on an adventure that will take us to far-flung locales and spelling words that we’ve never seen nor heard of before. Ayyy, it will be a sight to see, that’s for sure.
And, if anyone tells you that this fair program is doomed to be dashed upon the rocks of the great, salty, depths, you can just ne’er well give them this reply:
I am disinclined to acquiesce to your request, matey. I’ll see you scallywags at the bee and know that we are prepared for battle.
