    The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate was named the 2013 John Newbery Medal recipient on January 28, 2013 during the American Library Association’s (ALA) Mid-Winter Conference in Seattle, WA.  The John Newbery Medal is awarded annually to the author with the most outstanding contribution to children’s literature published in the United States the previous year.
