    Stress less in the Summertime

    Summertime and the living is easy…. Never were these words more true to me than at this time of the year. There are so many things that evoke summer to me including: cold, decadent ice cream in almost any flavor, although my preference is towards butter pecan, strawberry, peach, or Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey; the wonderful smell of Hawaiian Tropics suntan lotion; the ability to wear lots of white; the long, drawn-out days where the sun kisses the sky until after 8 o’clock in the evening; and just being fully and totally aware that nature is in full bloom and is all around us by hearing the chirping of the birds and the melodies of the insects playing in the tall, green tendrils of grass. Oh, how I love summer….

    The other part of summer that I love, even though I rarely get to go at this time of the year, is the ability to take trips to the shoreline and rediscover the awesome, magnificent power of the pounding waves on the beach. I’ve often thought that if I had been born in the Deep South that I would probably be a real lover of the deep blue sea, as if I’m not already. Of course, living in Kentucky makes it just a tad bit harder to realize that same depth of feeling that I have when I’m on vacation and nothing else makes sense in the world except for the roar of the surf around me. I can stand utterly motionless at the edge of the Gulf for what seems like eons and yet it seems as though time does not pass.

    This is the time in my life when I really tend to feel the most at peace with myself and the world. Staring out into the great expanse of ocean and wondering how far it extends to the other side before you hit land again is mesmerizing. I often wonder what it would be like to be down in the deep, dark, blue abyss hearing only the sounds of bubbles and letting all of your cares slide away. Just thinking about it puts me into a less stressful mindset. In this day and time, anything that helps me to decompress is a wonderful thing to behold.
