Freegal: a new frontier in music downloads

    By: Christy V. Temple

Have you heard the news? Freegal, the free music service at the Daviess County Public Library now has a new way to access the database. Just recently some changes have been made to the way in which the public can access this wonderful music site. In the past you could just go straight to our website, click on online resources, and then click on Freegal and get right in.

Well, the time has come for a new change to login to Freegal. Now, you can get to Freegal by still going to our website at, clicking on Online Resources, then click Freegal and it will take you to the site. At the site, you will type in “Daviess County Public Library” and hit search. After you have hit the search button it will pull up the library name and then you will click on it. Once you click on it, then it will take you to the library’s new and improved online catalog page with the BiblioCommons overlay.

Here is where the difference comes in. Before you would just enter your library card number and you would have access to the site. Now, you must create an account to access the catalog of free music. Basically, the same barcode or username and pin number that you used to create your online account to be able to access the online card catalog is the same one that will gain you access to Freegal as well.

In any event, once you have access to the Freegal music site you can now enjoy the ability to download from a large catalog of music online and the best part is that you get to keep the downloads. This is different from other sites where you can only download the item for a short time and then it automatically returns itself at the end of a particular lending period. In this case, once you download the item, it is yours to keep forever, unless of course you accidentally erase it from your device. If you do that then you will have to re-download it again another time.

The number of downloads each patron is allowed per week is 5. Once you have reached that limit then you can’t download anymore until midnight the following Sunday arrives. Once that time has passed then a new week has started again and you will have 5 new downloads available. You are also allowed to just stream the music and you can download videos too. However, for each video you download it uses up 2 of your total 5 downloads for the week. Otherwise, each individual song on Freegal is worth 1 download so you would be able to download 5 songs for the week.

Overall, Freegal is a fantastic database and one that receives quite a bit of use from our patrons. However, just remember that the way you get access to the database has now changed. Therefore, if you have any problems accessing it just let one of our staff members know and we can show you how to get on the site. Don’t let a change in logging on keep you from a ton of great music that you can keep forever.

Drop by the Daviess County Public Library today to check it out or you can access all of the website via your home computer. The site also has an app in the Apple store, Google play store, and on Amazon that you can download to your device. In this case, you can go through the app to get on to Freegal instead of going through our website. Either way, this catalog has millions of songs including those from the Sony label. So, what are you waiting for? Get started with Freegal today and discover a whole new frontier in streaming music and downloads.
